SERIES 2 - Managing Conflict and Preventing Crisis in the Family
The goal of this series is to help parents understand the
underlying causes of conflict and crisis in the family,
including the role they play in creating and resolving
conflicts with their teens, and the long term effects of
unresolved conflict on adolescent behaviors and academic
success. Parents will discuss techniques to improve family
communication, decision making, and emotional intelligence in
order to help their teens create a realistic vision for themselves.
1. Understanding Family Conflicts and Crisis
This topic will help parents build an understanding of the root causes of crisis in their family, and the roles that each plays in creating and managing conflict.
2. Conflicts and Crisis and their Effects on the Adolescent
While adolescents play a significant role in creating conflicts within the family, unmanaged conflicts and crisis can have severe consequences on the academic success and emotional development of an adolescent. Parents will explore the immediate and long-term effects of unresolved conflicts and crisis in the family.
3. Depression and Adolescents
Parents will learn about depression as a common consequence of chronic and/orunresolved conflict in adolescents, signs and symptoms of depression, and common strategies to manage depression in an adolescent.
4. Reversing the Effects of Gang Affiliations
Parents will increase their understanding of the dynamics within family conflicts that increase an adolescent’s risk for gang affiliation and explore strategies to increase their own positive effect on their adolescent's sense of identification and worth through improved discipline and dialogue.
5. Helping Families Manage Conflict
Parents will explore strategies to help their adolescents manage negative feelings and behaviors during these emotionally charged situations.
6. Adolescents and Decision-Making
Participants will learn about the decision making process and how to identify areas within the process to help guide their adolescent towards making decisions that lead to better outcomes.
7. Adolescents and Emotional Intelligence
Parents will explore emotional intelligence as a key to creating positive self-esteem and positive family dynamics, and will discuss strategies to strengthen emotional intelligence in their adolescents to help them achieve personal, academic and professional goals.
8.Helping Adolescents Create their Vision
Using the concept of starting with the end in mind, participants will learn how to dialogue with their adolescent to help them visualize major decisions and their outcomes in regards to family, school, choosing career/employment, friends and relationships.
